The 3 card On its Way Layout is a simple spread to use when you are expecting some news to arrive or if you want to see results to a question/situation. The Rider Card is all about something on its way. It could be a person, a situation, or news you are expecting. Many times it could be a surprise to you if you don’t ask a specific question.
- Remove the Rider card from the 36 card Lenormand deck and place it on the table.
- Shuffle the remaining 35 cards and think of your question.
- Cut the deck once. Assemble back on one pile.
- Take the first card and put it beneath the Rider card off to the left a bit.
- Take the second card from the shuffled deck and place it beside the first card. (see examples below)

Example #1: RIDER, MOUNTAIN, COFFIN
No Question: A situation is approaching you which will present some insurmountable challenges. Initially, the obstacle or delay appears great. There is a natural ending to this situation which could be a “blessing” in disguise.
Job Question: The energy of the news on its way brings some hardships in relation to your job or work question. This will be short-term and it will not last a long time. The news or information might include the completion of a project. The news may reveal that a person who has authority over you at work will no longer be there.
Relationship Question: Will your relationship improve? There are still more challenges ahead which you will find out about very soon. It’s not you. It’s an external problem which will be resolved in its own time.
EXAMPLE #2: RIDER, HEART, SUN
No Question: Can’t get much better! Life will be good. The news will lift your emotions to such a high that your happiness is clearly evident. You have a song in your heart. Kiss the messenger.
Job Question: Yes, all the way. News on its way will bring a smile to your face. You land the job. You change your job successfully. You get the promotion.
Relationship Question: Yes, he/she is the one. The answer you have been waiting for makes you ecstatic. Time to celebrate. Maybe your special someone makes a personal appearance to deliver this news.
EXAMPLE #3: RIDER, RING, SCYTHE
No Question: You will receive some news about a situation or about someone who is experiencing a breach in commitment. This energy is quick. The message is to the point with little room for discussion but not as hurtful as if the pointed part of the scythe faced the ring.
Job Question: No. The contract will not be renewed. The news on its way could be a severance package. You did not get the job you applied for. The message reveals that what seemed to a continuous job will end suddenly.
Relationship Question: Broken ties. The news on its way will be upset you. It will not work out. You may get served. On the more positive side – the roller coaster ride ends and you finally get the commitment you want. The Ring card is all about a cycle. Maybe you are in limbo about a relationship and just want a decision one way or another.
The above three examples illustrate a few ways on how to read the cards in the On its Way Layout.
